Student Membership Support
CSA Western Region announces stipends for
new student members and students who renewing for 2009

CSA Western Region seeks to actively support its student members and to encourage new students to join the Costume Society of America. The Western Region will pay $20.00 of the $45.00 cost of student membership for students who join through the Region, making it possible for you to become a member for only $25.00. For students who are current members, the Western Region will pay $20 of your $45 membership fee ONE TIME ONLY for renewing your membership for 2009.

As a member you receive discounts to national symposia and regional programs, which include behind-the-scenes tours and informative presentations. The Western Region is committed to keeping the student cost of all regional meetings very low, often lower than the actual cost of the event. You also receive regional and national newsletters and e-news with information about dress-related events and opportunities, CSA's annual scholarly journal Dress, and a discount on all CSA series publications. As a member, you are also eligible for CSA's grants and awards.

Call for Student Papers - Student Stipend Award

Western Region 2009 Symposium
Costume in the American West: Historic to Modern Times
September 25 - 26, 2009
Sacramento, California

The Western Region of the Costume Society of America announces a student stipend for one student member of the Costume Society of America to present an oral research paper at the Western Region Symposium in Sacramento, California, September 25-26, 2009.

All submissions must relate to the theme "Costume in the American West: Historic to Modern Times." Some possible topics for papers are: modern and historical fashion designers; dressmakers and milliners; art-to-wear; entertainment from Buffalo Bill and Wild West Shows to opera, dance, theater, film and television; counter cultures; costume in Western American literature; Native American and First Nations cultures; sports and leisure; the design process; manufacturing/manufacturers, gay culture, show girls and beyond!

The research paper will be given to a medium to large audience and must present new research findings and conclusions or raise stimulating questions in the field of costume. Limited to 20 minutes for presentation and all visuals must be in PowerPoint format. Student submissions will be considered separately from other submissions, but will be rated by a blind jury based on the following criteria:

  • Evidence of thorough and rigorous research
  • Clear presentation of the topic
  • Appropriate use of sources and images

The Stipend

The winning student will have a reserved slot for speaking at the symposium and will receive the following: free registration for the conference and two nights lodging at the symposium hotel in Sacramento, paid for by the Western Region of the Costume Society of America, directly to vendor. In addition, the winning student member will be reimbursed for travel costs to Sacramento up to $300 dollars; reimbursement will be by check, through the mail, after presentation of receipt for transportation, or a documented mileage statement, at the rate of $.58 per mile.

Submission Requirements (the Abstract consists of a cover page and the abstract)

Cover Page: Limited to one page. Please include the following:

  1. Name, address, e-mail, telephone number
  2. Institutional affiliation and degree sought
  3. Abstract Type: Student Oral Paper must be clearly indicated to be considered for stipend
  4. Title of Abstract

Abstract format and style: Please do not put your name on the abstract.

  1. Identification: Type of abstract (Student Oral Paper) centered at the top of first page, with the title of the Abstract beneath.
  2. Style: Please use the Chicago Manual of Style
  3. Length: not more than 500 words, inclusive of endnotes and bibliography.
  4. Spacing: Double-space text, single-space endnotes/footnotes and bibliography.
  5. Font: Times Roman or Times New Roman 12 point size, excluding endnotes or footnotes.
  6. Paper size: 8 ½ x 11" (non-US/Canada submissions excepted).

Submitting the Abstract

Submissions must be hard copy. Mail 6 copies of the abstract (stapled) AND 2 copies of cover page to:

Deadline: Postmarked by April 4, 2009.

The winning speaker will be notified of her/his status no later than May 22, 2009. Acceptance Required by June 1, 2009.

Submitters must be members of the Costume Society of America. Confirmation / correspondence will be sent by e-mail. Submitters will receive instructions on acceptance procedures and procedures for the electronic submission of abstract for the Abstracts Publication to be distributed at the symposium.
