"Mood Indigo"
Sep. 27, 2007 - Aug. 31, 2008
The exhibition Mood Indigo will be on display in the Kent State University Museum from September 27, 2007, to August 31, 2008. The museum's largest gallery will feature over sixty textiles and garments from around the world. From humble Japanese work wear to high fashion, the history of one of the oldest and most important dyes will begin with a study of the Indian origin and global dissemination of the indigofera plant. Highly sought after because of its rare ability to resist fading to sunlight and water and color most textiles without the use of a mordant, blue of indigo became a favorite of the masses, yet its rich color retained a mystical quality that is still with us today.

"100 Years of Design"
May 17, 2008 - Jan 4, 2009
This exhibition features upscale fashions dating from the 1830s to the 1930s from the Center for History's heralded costume collection. The exhibit, set against backdrops of period furnishings also from the museum's collections, offers a look at a century of history in South Bend and surrounding communities. Visitors can learn about "polite society," a culture in which fashions of the day were found in homes designed by leading American architects. They will find themselves transported to an era where the elite donned top hats and tails, and designer gowns and furs to attend gala events at places like South Bend's Oliver Opera House.

Department of Theater, University of Massachusetts Amherst. Warner is the author of When the Girls Came Out to Play:
The Birth of American Sportswear.
In the Twenty-first Century, we take sportswear for granted. We all wear it. But why "SPORTS wear"? What is its relationship to sport? Where did it come from? What struggles did women face in order to play sports, to wear clothing that allowed them freedom of movement in a fashion-driven world? What relationship do sports have to the clothing that defines American Style?
