"Contemporary Korean Fiber Art: Reinterpreting the Korean Patchwork"
Mar. 18 - Nov. 24, 2008
Fiber art has its origins in the making of practical items such as clothing, bedding, wrapping cloths, sitting mats, and other household articles using such organic materials as textile, paper, or wood. According to tradition, functionality had to be paired with ornamentation.
Like others in the field of contemporary Korean fiber art, the six artists - Kim Jeeun, Kwon Hyuk, Lee Chunghie, Oh Soonhee, Youn Soonran, and Yang Sang-hoon - whose works are displayed have transformed into modern expressions the materials and techniques used in traditional Korean crafts. They have combined materials such as hemp fiber, ramie, silk, and mulberry paper with synthetic fabrics, stainless steel, and spray paint. These artists employ knotting (maedeup), papermaking, the patchwork technique (jogakpo) of wrapping cloths, and other traditional methods along with their own innovative means.

Theatre de la Mode
These one-third human size mannequins celebrated world peace at the close of the World War II through their lavish display of the new “modern look” in fashions for women. After their premiere in Paris they toured Europe then America. The last stop of the original 1946 international tour of Theatre de la Mode was San Francisco where the mannequins remained until the early 1950s. At that time they were acquired by Maryhill Museum of Art. They went on a second world tour in the 1990s visiting Paris, New York, Baltimore, Portland and Tokyo.
Visitors to the exhibit will enter the enchanted world of 47 dramatically grouped mannequins dressed in the exquisitely detailed fashions of Paris in 1946 and posed in three artistic stage sets with lights designed specifically to create a theatrical atmosphere.

“The People”
Native Americans have lived in Nevada for thousands of years. During the centuries prior to the arrival of European and U.S. emigrants in the West, the Shoshone, Paiute and Washoe peoples created intricate cultures which harmonized with the desert. Suddenly forced off their lands in the 1800s by an ever-growing population of miners, ranchers and encroaching settlers, Nevada’s Native Americans had to make changes that were difficult and often traumatic. Focusing on clothing, dwellings, religion, and economic lifeways, this exhibition examines how Nevada’s Native Americans have struggled to survive and preserve their culture while adapting to a changing world.

Aug. 16, 2008 - Jan. 4, 2009
This exhibition focuses on the use of conventionalized design in textiles from 1860-1920. It includes costume and decorative household textiles. Designs by William Morris, Ann Macbeth, Liberty of London, Mariano Fortuny, and Maria Gallenga, are but a few of the designers of the era represented. "The Art and Craft of Dress"
Oct. 26, 2008
Ann Chaves, curator of The Art and Craft of Textile Design, presents an illustrated lecture on clothing of the Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco periods using many examples from her own personal collection.
Chaves owns Inglenook Textiles Needlework Studio in Pasadena. She designs and creates unique textiles which abide by the principles of Arts and Crafts design. Her work emphasizes fluid originality rather than mere reproduction of the Arts and Crafts movement. Her interest in hand crafted textiles was sparked at a young age by her Scottish grandmother who taught her to knit and sew. Chaves studied art education, design and textiles at Cazenovia College and Buffalo State College.
