"The Price of Fashion": The Costume Society's Annual Symposium
July 9 through July 11, 2010

The theme of the 2010 Symposium is The Price of Fashion focusing on the cost of production, whether it be clothes produced for wealthy individual clients or the phenomenon of mass production for a world market.

We return to Yorkshire for the first time in more than ten years and Leeds is a particularly appropriate venue for the Symposium theme, as it was the place where the mass-production of men's tailoring was developed in the mid 19th century, as well as the home of many women's ready-to-wear fashion labels in the 20th century, and has recently re-invented itself as a sophisticated shopping venue for fashion at all levels.

Keynote speakers will be Katrina Honeyman, Professor, School of History, University of Leeds. John Styles, Research Professor in History at the University of Hertfordshire and Lou Taylor, Professor of Dress & Textile History, University of Brighton. Our collections visit on Saturday will be to Leeds Discovery Centre where all of Leeds museums' collections are stored. Curator Natalie Raw will show delegates a selection of items from the costume collection. This collection of historical costume has its roots in the Sanderson collection bought by Leeds City Art Galleries in 1949. Especially rich in eighteenth-century dresses and fine suits, the collection has been extended to include work by leading modern designers such as Vivienne Westwood and Zandra Rhodes.

"Costume Colloquium II: Dress for Dance"
Florence, Italy
November 4-7, 2010

Costume Colloquium II: Dress for Dance will explore interdisciplinary aspects of dance dress and costume, this multi-cultural mode of human expression, from a variety of practical, historical and creative perspectives. A wide of variety of papers and presentations will provide participants with in depth knowledge and new information about unpublished research, new creations and/or practical experiments related to the international, interdisciplinary and intercultural themes associated with dress for dance.

Parallel to the academic sessions there will be several special events and venues which will give the participants an opportunity not only to visit never before seen treasures but also to network and socialize each other.

This unique symposium will be of interest not only to costume and dance historians, costume designers, costume makes, museum curators, archivists, textile and costume conservators, dancers and dance re-enactors, etc., but also to students and members of the public with a desire to learn about dress for dance from the experts in the fields examined.

As was the case for Costume Colloquium: A Tribute to Janet Arnold, the second edition will benefit from the collaboration of a number of prestigious national and international institutions who are supporting this new initiative. The topics covered will include the use of historic dress for re-enactment dances, and the interpretation of dance dress in documents and visual images, the creation of costumes employing traditional and contemporary materials and techniques and their conservation and museum display, and they will incorporate both theoretical and practical perspectives on these subjects.

"Very Sanderson - 150 Years of English Decoration"
Through 13 June 2010

Sanderson was founded by Arthur Sanderson in 1860 and for the last 150 years has been at the forefront of English decoration - producing the first coordinated collection of mass-produced wallpapers and fabrics in Britain. It also introduced a number of important technical innovations as well as developing a range of textiles and wallpapers by influential designers and Britain's first 'infinite' range of colors in household paints.

During its illustrious history the company has amassed a huge collection of wallpapers and textiles representing the many changing faces and fads of interior decoration. Celebrating 150 years of the company this exhibition highlights the best of its archive as well as brand new collections. Full of surprises, it will fascinate and inform those whose tastes run from the Arts & Crafts style, jazzy Moderne, fifties' Festival designs and Pop patterns, to decidedly contemporary art and decor.

Curated by Mary Schoeser - renowned textile curator and author - the exhibition will be accompanied by a sumptuously-illustrated book published by Thames & Hudson.

"Horrockses Fashions: Off the Peg Style in the '40s and '50s"
9 July 2010 - 24 October 2010

Horrockses Fashions Limited was the manufacturer of one of the most well-respected ready-to-wear labels of the 1940s and 1950s. The company is best known for their full-skirted dresses which were sought after by women everywhere and were even worn by Queen Elizabeth II. Although they were produced in considerable quantities from the start, the firm maintained an air of exclusivity for the brand, with an emphasis on good quality fabrics, especially cotton, with custom-designed patterns and fashion styling with Parisian couture overtones.

The colorful prints, particularly floral designs will provide a visual feast for visitors to the exhibition. The importance of fabric design on cotton was key to Horrockses Fashions' success; they acquired designs from a number of sources including in-house staff, commercial design studios, freelancers and also from well-known artists such as Graham Sutherland and Eduardo Paolozzi which were applied to the parent company's high quality cotton sheeting which was reserved exclusively for Horrockses Fashions.

The exhibition will focus on the range of the firm's production, from glamorous evening dresses, to vibrant summer frocks and sophisticated housecoats and beachwear. It will follow the story of the Horrockses' dress from initial fabric and fashion design, to production, promotion and consumption.

Curated by Dr. Christine Boydell - author and design historian - the exhibition will also be accompanied by a book published by V&A Publishing.

"Sue Timney and the art of Timney-Fowler"
November 19, 2010 through February 27, 2011

Sue Timney is the celebrated designer whose company, Timney-Fowler, is best known for its distinctive graphic black and white imagery. It is also one of a rare breed of design companies whose work flows effortlessly between fashion and interiors. Timney left the Royal College of Art in 1979 after which she formed Timney-Fowler with Grahame Fowler. Sue and Grahame collaborated with designers such as Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto, Ralph Lauren and Diane von Furstenberg, producing fashion and fabric concepts for their labels. They also developed several Timney-Fowler clothing licenses for work sold around the world.

2010 is the 30th anniversary of Timney-Fowler and will be marked by an exhibition at the FTM - a retrospective of both Sue's career as a designer and her work with Timney-Fowler, featuring some unique and exclusive material in an exciting, bold display developed in collaboration with Sue. The exhibition will explore the history and themes of this world-recognized design firm.

"Vionnet at the Fashion Museum"
Through 2010

The Fashion Museum, working in partnership with the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Bowes Museum, has saved a collection of rare 1930s evening dresses by Madeleine Vionnet, one of the greatest 20th century couturiers, for the nation.

The two dresses acquired by the Fashion Museum, both of which are exquisite examples of Vionnet's skill in manipulating fabric, will be on display in the Fashion Museum galleries from 5 December 2009.

The dresses are being prepared for display this autumn. In the meantime, fashion and textile students from the School of Art and Design at Bath Spa University will have a once in a lifetime opportunity to study the dresses up close in special study sessions at the Fashion Museum's Study Facilities. The students will sketch the dresses and the best sketches will be published on the Fashion Museum website in December 2009 when the actual dresses go on display in the museum galleries for all to see.

Permanent Displays includes women's wear and menswear from the 18th century to the present day.

"Marriage in the Movies"
Through October 31, 2010

The wedding dress is probably the most poignant symbol of the start of a marriage. Woven with symbolism and tradition, wedding dresses reflect not only the tastes and style of the bride but the social customs and attitudes of society.

This exhibition takes you through two centuries of bridal fashion, from the 1740s to 1930s, refracted through the lens of the film or TV camera.

Also on display are a selection of bridal accessories from our collection, and a small gallery of photos of brides from the Stewart family, who own Shambellie House. Together, the dresses, accessories and pictures tell the story of wedding customs in Scotland and beyond.
