A. 2004 CSA SYMPOSIUM: CALL FOR PAPERS DEADLINE OCTOBER 1st
FOR "HOT, HAUTE HOUSTON." The CSA national symposium -- May
26-29, 2004 in Houston -- calls for your papers and poster
presentations on: "20th Century Design: Fashion, Interiors,
Architecture and the Performing Arts" by October 1, 2003.

B. POPULAR CULTURE ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA: A Call for
Papers. Papers may be on any subject related to Fashion,
Appearance and the Body for the 2004 National Meeting of the
Popular Culture/American Culture Associations on April 7-10,
2004 in San Antonio, TX. Deadline for Paper/Panel Proposals
is November 15, 2003; send via e-mail a one page proposal
for a single paper. For panels please e-mail Trish. Trish
says that she would love to see a panel on Hollywood this

2. SPEAKING EVENTS
 
A. FUNCTIONAL FASHIONS: On Saturday, September 6, 2003, Old
Sturbridge Village in Sturbridge, MA will have an all-day
event, "Functional Fashions," that will feature tours of
exhibits and demonstrations on the life of early 19th
century New Englanders. Curator and CSA member Aimee Newell
will give a talk on getting dressed in rural New England.

B. DRESS DETECTIVE: Jo Ann C. Stabb, member of Region V and
current member of the National Board of Directors, has been
playing "Dress Detective" for the California State Parks
system. She will give a slide lecture entitled "Peeling Off
The Layers" on one of those historic costume collections at
the historic Fischer-Hanlon House in Benicia, California,
the site of the first State Capitol of California, just east
of San Francisco, on Saturday, October 4, 2003 at 2 pm. The
public is invited; there will be a $6 admission fee. For

C. JEWELRY HISTORIANS: The American Society of Jewelry
Historians will have two lectures this fall in New York
City. The first will be on September 23, 2003 at 6 pm at the
Cooper-Hewitt Museum. The subject will be "Bakelite
Jewelry," speaker Matthew Burkholz. On November 19, 2003,
Peter Shemonsky will speak on "From the Back: Jewelry
Construction." Location TBA. Non-ASJH members are always
welcome to attend lectures for a fee of $10 but reservations

3. JUST OPENED!

A. THE ART OF DRESS: Named after Jane Ashelford's book, "The
Art of Dress" clothing exhibit just opened for a month's run
and will be on display until September 30, 2003 at the
Carnegie Art Center in Oregon City, Oregon. The exhibit
examines dresses of the 1800's and how they changed from one
decade to the next. What's more, it will examine what the
woman did artistically with the dress to keep up with
fashion. Region V CSA member Marge Harding is the curator of

B. THE HEART OF SPAIN: A rare exhibition of Spain's
religious art, antiquities and icons has just opened at the
Alexandria Museum of Art in Alexandria, LA and will be shown
until November 30, 2003. As part of the region's
Bicentennial Celebration of the Louisiana Purchase, these
paintings, tapestries, sculptures, and pieces of jewelry
have been gathered for this one spectacular show. See

providing one profile per issue of a member whose activities
have earned special recognition or national prominence. Or a

Chicago's fall term all-day hat design class begins on Sept.

7. JUDY FRATER AT THE SMITHSONIAN

In celebration of completion of 10 years of "Social
Enterprise," the Smithsonian's Freer-Sackler Gallery in
Washington, D.C. presents a Kala Raksha Trunk show and
lecture on October 22, 2003 by Judy Frater. Judy is one of
the pioneering founders of Kala Raksha, a grassroots
organization of women embroiderers in Gujarat, India.
"Empowerment through Textiles" is the title of Judy's talk.
And on October 23-26 in the Freer Conference Room from 10-5,
you can find on sale the latest in Kala Raksha's collection
of exquisite hand embroidered, appliqued and patch worked

8. AUCTION IN THE FALL

Karen Augusta in association with the Charles A. Whitaker
Auction Company will be holding their fall vintage clothing
and textile auction on October 28 & 29, 2003 in New Hope,
PA. Several museums and historical societies have
de-accessioned a large grouping of garments and textiles,
all to be sold without minimum or reserve. Added to these
lots are selections from private consignors, including
liquidations of two outstanding collections begun more than
sixty years ago. Of particular interest are rare costumes
once owned by Doris Langley Moore, founder of The Museum of
Costume, Bath (UK).

9. SPINNING & WEAVING WEEK CELEBRATION

The American Textile History Museum in Lowell, MA is hosting
a National Spinning & Weaving Week Celebration October 7-11,
2003. The Weavers Guild of Boston members will be in
residence for the week to demonstrate fiber art skills and
offer a chance for visitors of all ages to try their hand at
looms and wheels during regular Museum hours. Free with

12. RUNWAY HAPPENINGS

A. "BODY PACKAGING: Identity Crisis" LIVE ART ON THE RUNWAY:
A visually explosive event, a surreal journey where art,
fashion and technology fuse together to tantalize the
senses. Artists from all disciplines create extraordinary
wearable masterpieces staged for the runway. The event is on
October 11, 2003 at 7 pm at the Colorado Springs City
Auditorium, Colorado Springs, CO.
