Dyese Matthews is a PhD student at Cornell University studying Fiber Science and Apparel Design. In her research she aims to explore Black dress history, the intersections of dress practices and identity negotiations, Black empowerment and dress, societal sustainability throughout the fashion system, and consumer behavior practices related to textile and apparel. She completed her MS at Iowa State University in 2020, focusing on Black women student experiences using dress to negotiate their Black and activist identities. Through this research, she co-curated Collegiate Fashion and Activism: Black Women’s Styles on the College Campus, a fashion museum exhibition. She has been a member of CSA since 2017 and has presented at multiple CSA symposia and meetings.
