Michaele Thurgood Haynes

2022-2025

Michaele Thurgood Haynes became interested in historic dress in grade school when a trunk full of antique clothing was donated to her church's rummage sale. As soon as she saw the 1890s canvas swimming shoes, she was hooked. Her interest continued as an undergraduate costume design minor at the University of Texas at Austin which has a wonderful historical dress collection. She received my PhD in Cultural Anthropology with a focus on personal appearance and festivals. Haynes was a curator at the Witte Museum in San Antonio for 15 years and taught anthropological courses at various universities as adjunct faculty during that time. Since my retirement from the museum, she has taught Cultural Perspectives on Dress and Fashion History at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio.
