Susan Hannel

Susan Hannel is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Rhode Island. Her research considers fashion during the 1920s and 1930s. She is interested in exotic design inspiration with racist components, especially the ‘Africana Craze’ in the mid-20s. She also creates original designs for juried competitions. Her teaching encompasses the technical areas of fashion design: flat, draping and CAD patternmaking, apparel construction, and apparel development. She has also taught courses in fashion history and culture. She has presented her research at national and regional CSA meetings, the International Textiles and Apparel Association, and the Popular Culture Association. Hannel received her MS and PhD in Textiles and Clothing from The Ohio State University with a minor area in American history. She studied fashion design at the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science (now Jefferson University), and the Columbus College of Art and Design.
