Dyese Matthews

Dr. Dyese Matthews is an award-winning researcher, author, and curator with a 10-year academic background in fashion studies. She earned her B.A.A. in Fashion Merchandising and Design from Central Michigan University in 2018, and M.S. in Apparel Merchandising and Design from Iowa State University in 2020. She earned her PhD in Apparel Design studies from Cornell University in 2024. In her research, teaching, curatorial, and community engagement practices, Dr. Matthews explores the system of fashion consumption, production, distribution, and archiving thorough a critical lens. She primarily investigates how dress is a medium and an embodied practice for liberation and identity expression across the African Diaspora. Dr. Matthews is currently an Assistant Professor of Fashion Management and Social Justice in the School of Fashion at Parsons in New York City.
