Membership Information

Joining Costume Society of America is a strategic step toward deeper engagement with the field of dress and fashion studies. Whether you're a curator, designer, historian, or student, CSA offers benefits that support your work, expand your network, and keep you informed. From exclusive publications and programming to awards, discounts, and leadership opportunities, CSA membership is designed to meet you where you are—and help you grow.


CSA offers annual memberships for Individuals, Businesses, Museums, and Associations (available directly through CSA), as well as Libraries (available through our publisher). Enrollment begins once payment is received (and for Student, Emerging Professional, and Retired/Emeritus categories, once eligibility is confirmed). New members receive a formal welcome letter within one month of approval, along with access to member benefits and communications.

A Standard Level Membership for $130 provides full access to CSA’s benefits:

Participate in CSA governance with one vote in annual elections and organizational decisions.

CSA offers reduced-rate membership tiers to support students, recent graduates, and retired professionals—ensuring continued access to the full range of benefits while recognizing different stages of career and contribution.

Student – $65

Includes all Standard Level benefits at a reduced rate. Eligibility requires full- or part-time enrollment in a degree-granting program (including online), with proof of student status.

Emerging Professional – $105

Includes all Standard Level benefits at a reduced rate for individuals within three years of graduation. Eligibility is confirmed prior to activation.

Retired/Emeritus – $105

Includes all Standard Level benefits at a reduced rate for members who have retired or attained Emeritus status and have at least five years of CSA membership (self-reported). Proof of status may be requested.

CSA Patron and Champion memberships offer an opportunity to support the society beyond the standard rate, helping sustain discounted access for students, emerging professionals, and retired members while receiving all the benefits of Standard membership.

CSA Patron - $155

This level includes a $25 donation to CSA, which subsidizes the discount for one Emerging Professional or Retired/Emeritus membership. 

CSA Champion - $195

This level includes a $65 donation to CSA, which subsidizes the cost for one Student membership.

Memberships for Museums, Associations, and Businesses

Designed for mission-aligned partners seeking engagement with CSA’s professional network, resources, and programming opportunities.

Museum & Association - $260

Museum and Association Members are non-profit organizations that have multiple staff or board of director members who would like to participate in CSA activities and services. This level includes all Standard Level benefits for two (2) members.


Please note: organizations such as libraries and universities that would like to provide public access to Dress through their online library database or with physical copies in the stacks require Library Memberships. Please see information on that type below.

Business Associate - $380

Business Associate Members are for-profit companies with staff who wish to engage with CSA’s professional community. This level includes all Standard Level benefits for two members, plus a listing in the CSA Business Directory, one annual promotional e-blast (valued at $200), 10% off CSA advertising rates, and access to the job board at the member rate.

Library Memberships

Library Membership (formerly “Institutional”) is designed for libraries, universities, and similar entities that wish to offer public access to Dress—either through their online databases or physical collections. This subscription also grants eligibility for two individuals from the subscribing organization to receive full CSA member benefits.

Membership rates are not tax deductible as charitable contributions for federal income tax purposes, but may be deductible as ordinary and necessary business expenses. Donations above the price of Individual Membership may be deductible as charitable contributions to the extent provided by law.
