Student Liaison

Lauryn Grubbs is a PhD student in the Apparel Design program at Cornell University, where her research examines the intersections of fashion, media, and cultural studies. Her work investigates how U.S. visual culture shapes the biopolitics and everyday style practices of Black American women, with the broader goal of expanding diverse representation within fashion history and theory. Lauryn’s research agenda centers on bringing visibility to underrepresented groups by analyzing their appearance and dress practices and advocating for their inclusion within the scholarly canon. She connects this academic focus to her creative and entrepreneurial pursuits, aiming to platform minority artists and designers and champion their work within fashion, art, and design. Through this combined scholarly and creative practice, Lauryn seeks to challenge dominant narratives, broaden the scope of fashion studies, and contribute to a more inclusive understanding of dress and visual culture.
